Launching 'The FoodPorn Diaries'

After pondering over many moons, I've decided to separate my recipe and restaurant reviews.
Food for Swaps has always been about documenting the recipes that are dear to me and work in my kitchen. Or the ones that have failed miserably and I never want to try again. Photographing my escapades in the kitchen and sharing them with you, so that you can have tried and tested recipes to fall back on! And i'd like to keep it that way. Fair? ... I think so  :P
So I'm moving all my restaurant reviews to my other blog - 'The FoodPorn Diaries'. This will be an exclusive place to share my experiences of eating out - whether they be in Bangalore or outside. I'm on a quest for lust worthy food!

And to give you a preview of what’s in store, here’s an excerpt from the latest entry:
Conversations over Coffee
When The Serai invited eight bloggers to celebrate Woman’s Day at their lovely resort in Chickmagalur I did a double take. Really? I was swamped with work that week. I quickly asked for the names of the rest of the bloggers. I didn’t know anybody. (My interest was fading). They wanted me to come and spend two days getting fawned over and pampered. (Interest awakened). Have a look at the website, they insisted. I peeked into it reluctantly. (Wow, Desire generated). They called me back. There was a spa treatment involved, Will I be able to make it? (Resolve weakened). I cancelled my meeting. I was going to the Serai!
We met at the CafĂ© Coffee Day Square on Lavelle road. (Serai and CCD are owned by the same parent company). After introducing ourselves and tucking into the breakfast at CCD, we got ourselves into a minivan and drove out of the city. It’s amazing how ten women who have never met before can talk till their jaws drop. No need for introductions, thank you very much!
If that peaked your interest and you want to read more…here's the link to the new blog. Bless it by visiting it! :)
You can also ‘Like’ the Facebook page to get regular updates on What's hot ... in the food world obviously!
Thanks for stopping by … love as always ... FoodforSwaps J

A Bloggers Meet and Four Seasons Wine Tasting

What is a good way to spend a Sunday? Couple of friends sharing a good meal over some great wine by the poolside on a cheery afternoon - pretty much hits the spot! So that’s what I did, this Sunday. I was invited to a Bloggers Meet at the Royal Orchid which was hosted by Four Seasons Wine. The invite promised a live cooking demo, wine tasting and food pairing and a chance to catch up with fellow bloggers. What’s not to like?

Third times a Charm... Happy Birthday Food for Swaps!

Food for Swaps turned three on 24th of July. I had just gotten back from holiday and had massive withdrawal symptoms! That coupled with a lost wallet and pending work load of 20 days had me walking a tightrope! So you can see how the idea of putting pen down to paper (or rather finger to keyboard) was far from my mind. Actually it was like this invisible boulder on my shoulder (i'm rhyming!) that I chose to ignore for 3 days. But I can't any longer - my little blog has become such a comfortable part of my daily routine that turning three just seemed like the inevitable. And I owe it to my blog to say "HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOOD FOR SWAPS"! Thanks for making my days more enjoyable and my meal times more creative and my pictures more lustworthy ! And I thank you guys for hanging around and taking this food journey with me! Like they say "Third times a Charm" and "Three's a crowd" and a jolly good one we have right now!!

I picked my top recipes of the past year for you guys. Now these are my personal favorites, the ones that, if I had a recipe book I would put a big gold star on! Hope you have fun! Love Always ... Food for Swaps.

In no particular order.....

Article on Food Bloggers in Bangalore mentions Food for Swaps!

Bengaluru’s food blog trail

Mediterranean cuisine did you say? Or do you want a quick recipe on mango based dessert this summer? A peek into some of Bengaluru based food bloggers.
By Maitreyi Ananth

Food blogging is growing in India, and a lot of food enthusiasts are sharing their wonderful recipes online. Each of them have their unique stories, experiences, and of course, their food recipes. Here are three food bloggers who live in Bengaluru doing what they love doing, and a peek at their journeys.

Blog beginnings
Archana Doshi, on her food blog , calls herself a “chef, blogger, author, food writer” and more. She is a software engineer by profession but when she became a mother, she had to leave her career behind. At this time she decided to blog about parenting, and a little later, she began blogging about the recipes that she invented in her own kitchen.

“I developed a flair and love for cooking during my childhood when I worked with my mother in the kitchen helping her with various chores,” says Archana. “Over time my traffic kept increasing, the growth provided the drive to cook, write and photograph food,” she says.
Another food lover, Chinmayie Bhat’s cooking days began when she was in college. “When I moved to Bangalore for college into my own little house at the age of 17, I started cooking all three meals a day.”
Though her food was a hit, Chinmayie says she could never remember the exact recipe. “Every time somebody tried something special I had made, they would ask me for the recipe and I would be blank. I never remember my recipes. Cooking to me is very natural and spontaneous,” she says.
After a while she began to post her recipes and photographs on her Facebook page. As time went by, more people began asking her for her recipes. That’s when she decided to start her own blog.
For Swapna Venkatesh who started her own food blog in 2009, food was a major part since she was nine. “We always helped around home, especially whenever there was something different being cooked; I was not interested in the usual dhal and chaaval.”

What’s special?
All these food lovers began with by loving one thing, but now over time, they’ve become masters in their own fields and have unique areas of interest in cooking.
Cooking with local ingredients and what’s available in her kitchen is what Chimayie does. Despite being a full-time mother, Chinmayie’s blog is always flowing with new recipes as the seasons change.
“I am thankful that I have access to gorgeous seasonal fruits and vegetables throughout the year and I am going to make complete use of it. Eating seasonal and local is healthier and more sustainable than eating imported gourmet food from the other parts of the world,” she says.

Growing up in the town of Puttur, Chinmayie ate simple seasonal food. For a while she moved away from these traditional foods trying different cuisines and dishes. “But I am back to basics again with a lot of respect and love for eating simple,” she says.
Having stayed in many countries, Archana cooks a variety of dishes of different cuisines. Archana’s recipes are all healthy and the ingredients used are fresh, not packaged or processed. Archana began to make her own baby food for her two sons when they were small. “I used to grind baby cereal at home, make fresh pureed food every day and never bought ready to eat packaged baby food,” she says.
Swapna enjoys cooking Italian and Mediterranean foods the most. She kept a book in which she would record her recipes. Soon she saw others who were blogging about their own food, and she too thought it was time to put her own recipes online. At this time, she had also started becoming interested in photography, so everything fit.

Flavourful journey
Archana started her food blog in 2007, and today, has over a million visitors on her blog and 7500 fans on Facebook. Archana also conducts cooking classes in the city. Details are available on her site.
Chinmayie’s posts of various foods and drinks all have a story to tell, which makes reading them interesting. She shares her thoughts, how she came about making the dish, and what the process was like.
“I’m pretty happy as I get about 2000-3000 views per month,” Swapna says. Though she could increase the number of views on her site, Swapna prefers to keep her site ad-free.
Managing blogs and balancing their other interests is a task for these food bloggers, but yet, they have found what they’re passionate about, cooking and food. What more, they’re enjoying it, and thousands are benefitting from it!

Zomato Restaurant Guide 2012 - A Review

The kind people of Zomato sent me the “Zomato Restaurant Guide 2012” (Bangalore) this week. Considering this is their first attempt at publishing a physical food guide and my first attempt at writing a book review - let’s hope the Gods will be kind.

I buy food guidebooks religiously every year - even though I place them on a bookshelf and use them as paperweights once I’ve read them cover to cover. (Yes, I do read a guidebook – just like a cookbook it can transport me to a food wonderland). The reason for ignoring them after aquring them (just like men and the chase!), is that - searching online for a restaurant is so much simpler. (brunch+indiranagar+continental >hit enter). The reason most guidebooks are cumbersome, is because they are not ready-answer-providers. They are directories, with tiny little lettering that one has to frown over with a microscope to get your pick. So has Zomato solved that riddle? Let’s find out.

First impressions – the book looks good. The paper quality is nice and glossy (compared to most other review books where the pages are so thin you can see through them - reminds me a lot about yellow pages!). Zomato is associated with Citibank for this book and it’s only obvious that a few pages will be dedicated to Citibank promotions and restaurants tied up with the same. (But who’s complaining when someone highlights discounts?).

After a quick note about Zomato.com (They claim it’s the largest electronic restaurant guide in the country serving more than 3 million users every month) and another one pager from the editor about how this book aims to “distill the best of the website in an innovative and user friendly form” – I was ready to dive right in.

When you are deciding on which restaurant to visit, the general areas of elimination and deduction are cuisine, price, location, Veg/Non-veg (just thought about my veggie friends) and if it serves alcohol. (Legally or illegally!) If you are leafing through a guide book, you would go to the index and then narrow down choices by cuisine and then keep flipping back and forth to figure out the rest of the details. This is where the Zomato folks have done a clever thing to differentiate themselves from the pack. The first few pages are like a ready reckoner of frequently asked questions when we start to look for a restaurant. They have 22 categories (Eg: Beer in a Bar, Catching Up, Sunday Brunch, Kid Friendly etc.) and restaurants tagged to those. Next to each restaurant name is a bunch of logos which will give you more details about the cost, whether they accept Credit Card (Citibank darlings!), whether they serve alcohol or they have home delivery. I might not readily agree with their choice of restaurants in most of their categories, but at least they are headed in the right direction!

The rest of the book is the standard fare of restaurants listed from A-Z and further details. This irks me because there is no grouping by area or cuisine. Even the index fails me here, because it’s just the exact list from the body of the book (minus details) with page numbers next to it! Huh??? The purpose of an index is to cross reference – so give me some intelligence in this area! Maybe the next edition will have a split by area (CBD, Kormangala, Bangalore North etc.) which will make it much simpler to navigate the 100 odd pages. What I would really like though is a split by area and then cuisine! I can hear the Zomato folks groaning here. Ok, ok I get it … I’ll hit the website for such detailed distillations!

Now that I battered them with the stick, its time to offer the carrot. Other guide books shy away from giving restaurant’s ratings or recommending the best dish there, in order to appear impartial. Zomato, I see, has no such qualms! That’s because they’ve used the user’s ratings from their website and this absolves them of all sin. The users are not the Big Bad Corporation, but people like you and me. Now, we can always go into a lengthy debate about sample size and quality, but at the end of the day - I like to gauge the general opinion of a place before heading out. Another helpful inclusion from Zomato is their ‘Don’t Miss’ box. It gives you a list of the must try/ most popular dishes at that restaurant. And now my favorite feature - I love the fact that they have a QR code next to every restaurant listed! What’s a QR code you ask? Well it’s a nifty little code that lets smart phone users scan it and view the restaurant’s menu on the Zomato portal. So geeky cool! *clap clap clap*

So would I pay 200 bucks to buy this off the shelf? For a comprehensive listing of every restaurant in every nook and corner in Bangalore – No. For a friendly nudge from a group of fellow foodies to try something that they have, and loved – Yes. And the QR code doesn’t hurt either!

Strawberry Milkshake and My 100th Post

It’s my 100th post today. I can’t believe I had enough material to go this far (apparently I do!) Bloggers say that lasting the 2 years is the biggest challenge. You need to be interested in what you blog about and let’s face it, people need to be interested in what you write about. You might say that you give a rat’s ass about what people think…but that’s not true. You need an audience to appreciate art. (Ok, in my case … the art of blabbering!) If nothing else, I have at least 100 failsafe recipes that I can always fall back on! I’ve also come to realize that I care as much,  (if not more) about my pictures that accompany each blog post. So the journey for me has been about taking baby steps to produce pics that I am proud of. (Here’s the link to my first post and picture. (Click Here) No, am not ashamed, it’s a learning curve right?) :P

Talking of learning curves, was I going to put up some insurmountable culinary challenge as my 100th post? Hell No! Most of the inspiring recipes for me are ones that you look at and decide instantly, “I can make that …tonight or right now”. It’s recipes that look simple and delicious and goad you into thinking that you can create them with a flourish of your hand. So here’s the Strawberry Smoothie recipe. No fuss, all Love!
P.S. Thanks for stopping by…

Strawberry Smoothie

Prep time: 10 mins
Serves: 2

What you need:

200 gms fresh Strawberries
400 ml of Milk, cold
2 scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream
2 Tbsp of Sugar

What to do:

Take the green tops off the strawberries (he he he!), Wash them under running water. Toss them in a blender with the Sugar and whir around for 3 mins till you get a lovely red puree. Now Add the ice cream in and blend for 1 min. Finish by adding the milk in and run the blender for 2 more mins till you get a nice and frothy mix. Check for sweetness. (you can add more sugar if you want at this point – what are you like carzy??)

Pour into a tall glass and enjoy making a milk mustache!

I love this pic below... Something about it makes me feel like I'm floating on a cloud :)

Happy Birthday - Food for Swaps turns TWO!!

Happy Birthday to you… Happy Birthday to you… Happy Birthday dear FoodforSwaps…. Happy Birthday to you!

So we enter our terrible two’s today :)  I must say, the journey has been supremely fulfilling. What started out as a way to document all the things I tried out in the kitchen has now turned into something that inspires me to try out things! It gives me a space to play out my food obsession and my photography. It’s my little window to the world of foodies – you guys, who stop by the blog and send me little words of praise, encouragement and new ideas. So today, I just want to leave you a comment – Thank you for rocking this party for so long!

I have a few additions to the blog, to mark the anniversary. An 'About' page – yes I know, I do like to wax eloquent. And a 'Food Blog searcher' – more foodies more fun! So enjoy and keep stopping by!

Happy 2011!

“People are so worried about what they eat between Chirstmas and New year when in reality they need to be worried about what they eat between New year and Christmas!” so said Anonymous. Agreed we all overindulge during the holidays and why not? It’s the season to be jolly :)  I was away on holiday in Sri Lanka and trust me, even if you tried, you can’t stop overindulging. Sun, Sand, Surf … all add up to an atmosphere of blissful overeating. Add to it beers and wines and cocktails and you could really be in a glutton’s heaven. (MY heaven to be precise!) So without much adieu I wish you a wonderful 2011, filled with all things good and blissful and lipsmackingly awesome!

P.S. Some seafood that I lovingly shoved my face with …

Muesli and my new Canon 500D

I know this has nothing to do with food... but considering I just upgraded from my old kodak of 5 years ( I know I know.. tsk tsk.. practically a fossil) I can't help but gloat. No food pics on this post.. just one of my darling baby Muesli. (Yes, I named my cat after cereal! But what do you expect from a foodie?!) Hopefully I can turn out some better pictures with this one... Wish me luck!

Genesis

The reason God created Adam and Eve was that he could get a comment out of someone for what he created. If he was the only one to enjoy his creation, life would be pretty boring! In God's footsteps... My blog's created.. feel free to leave your thoughts on it. Also its still Day 1, so give me time to breath life into it. Also for all the people who think this blog is in anyway religiously inclined because God and Genesis is the first post, rest assured its not. So welcome to Food for Swaps and have a great weekend!
